When we create a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, we are creating a document that can have multiple spreadsheets. We have one spreadsheet automatically added for us. We can add more spreadsheets as needed. To add a spreadsheet, we need to click on the Plus button to the left of the first spreadsheet.
Connecting to wireless networks is an essential part of working with Chromebooks. We connect to wireless networks at home, coffee shops, hotels and public locations. The wireless receiver on devices like Chromebooks looks for the closest and strongest signal. This is useful most of the time, but it can be a source of vulnerability. Wireless connections or WiFi hotspots can be easily imitated. Your device usually can't distinguish one WiFi connection named "Free Internet" from another with the same name. One may be a trusted connection from a local coffee shop, but another may be a less trustworthy.
Devices help connect to wireless connections by storing the connection name and settings. It uses this information to automatically connect when it finds a similar wireless connection. It's a good idea to remove wireless network connections that aren't being used regularly, especially public access networks.
The option to manage wireless networks is in the Chromebook Settings. Click on the right side of the shelf and select Settings.
Chrome OS on Chromebooks is very reliable. If a Chromebook doesn't work normally or there are issues, we can install a fresh copy of the Chrome operating system. The Chrome OS can be reinstalled using a Flash Drive in a few minutes.
If the Chromebook isn't having issues, it’s usually a good idea to have a flash drive with the Chrome OS installer. You might never need it but it’s better to have it and not need it. We can create a recovery USB using any Chromebook or Chrome browser on Mac or Windows.
To create the installer we need a Chromebook or a computer with the Chrome browser installed. We also need an SD card or a USB drive. Try to use a newer SD card or USB drive, it will help the process go much faster. Older SD cards or Flash drives could produce errors. The process will erase everything on the SD card or Flash drive.
On a Chromebook or Chrome browser, go to the Chrome Web Store. To access the web store we can click on the Launcher icon on our Chromebook Shelf or we can go to "http://chrome.google.com/web store" on Mac or Windows.
Chromebooks and the Chrome operating system usually work very well. There might be a time when a Chromebook might not work as well as it once did. Resetting the Chrombook and the operating system might help restore the device to good working order.
There is an option called Powerwash which will erase and reset the Chromebook. This will erase all the content stored on the Chromebook and remove any accounts. Make sure to backup any stored content from the Chromebook to a cloud account or an external drive before using Powerwash.
Powerwash is part of the Chrome operating system and can be found in settings.
Click on the right side of the Shelf.
Google provides a very useful tool which can be used to remote into other devices like Chromebooks or computers with the Chrome browser installed. This can be used to access another personal device or to provide technical support on other devices.
The Chrome Remote App is used to remote into devices. This means we can access and control another computer from our computer. The remote app includes an option to remote into other Chromebooks for support and an option to setup personal devices like Mac and Windows computers for Remote Desktop access. Chrome Remote Desktop can only be used to remote into computers like Mac or Windows. It cannot be used to remote into Chromebooks.
The Chrome Remote App can be found and installed from the Chrome Store. Go to the Chrome web store and search for Chrome remote desktop.
Google offers a very useful tool that can be used to remote into other devices. In this lesson, we will be installing the Chrome Remote App and using it to remote onto another Chromebook and Chrome browser.

Screencastify is a free extension for the Chrome browser. It is used to record the computer's desktop and application. Screencastify will use the microphone that that is part of your computer. We can connect other microphones to the computer. Most microphones can be used by Screencastify. Plug the microphone into the computer USB port before starting the Screencastify extension.
Click on the Screencastify extension and select one of the recording options.
Screencastify is a free extension for the Chrome browser and Chromebooks. The Chrome browser is available for most operating systems and is free. The extension can be download and installed from the Google Chrome Web Store.
Screencastify can be used to record content on the Internet. This includes content created with Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets. These documents can be used to provide instructions, lessons, and tutorials. Please be mindful of copyright law when recording content on the Internet.

Screencastify is a free extension for the Chrome browser and Chromebook. It is used to record the contents of your computer screen. Teachers can use Screencastify to record lessons, instructions or lectures. Students can use Screencastify to present information to the class and as part of assignments given to teachers. The extension can be installed from the Chrome Web store. In this lesson we look at the setup process after installing the extension.
During the setup process, we need to allow Screencastify to access and perform functions using the browser. It also needs permission to access Google Drive, which is where recorded videos are typically saved. Screencastify can use the webcam on the computer to record video, typically that of the presenter. The video captured through the webcam can be included in the screencast or it can be recorded separately. Part of the setup includes granting permission to Screencastify so it can access the webcam camera.

The latest iOS versions for iPhone and iPad provide predictive text. This predictive text is very useful when we need to complete one or two words. In addition to predictive text, these devices include text replacement options. With text replacement, we can use text shortcuts to quickly write out text, phrases and sentences we use regularly.
Let’s create a replacement text shortcut. Tap on the Settings icon.
The option to use accent marks and diacritical marks when using iPhone or iPad is already available with your device’s onscreen keyboard. The sentence in this example is written in Spanish. It needs a diacritical and accent mark. We can add these marks as we’re writing the text. I wrote the sentence without the marks as an example.
If you’re like me, there are often times when we might need to have something written in another language. I use the English formatted keyboard for all of my writing and it can be used to help me with special characters needed in other languages. I usually need to write something in Spanish or use a Spanish word in a document.
One thing that is common in many languages is the use of accent and diacritical marks. Access to these special marks is built right into the latest keyboards and Mac OS. In this example, we have the Notes application open. This sentence reads, “The children are playing”. The sentence needs a diacritical mark and an accent mark. Actually, Notes put the diacritical and the accent mark for me. I removed them to demonstrate the use of the special keys.
The second “n” in ninos needs to be a special character called a tilde, and there needs to be an accent mark on the “a” in estan. We’ll erase the letter “n” and type it again. This time, we’ll press and hold the letter “n”. When we do, a contextual menu appears with the accent and diacritical mark options available for the letter. Below each of the options is a number. We can choose which character to use by pressing the number of that character on our keyboard. We can also use the left or right arrow keys to highlight the character we need.
Automator is an application on Mac that helps create automated workflows for repetitive tasks. In this example, we have a folder that has several images. We would like to rename these files based on a naming convention. A naming convention is a set of rules for choosing the sequence of characters like the name of files. These files already have a basic naming structure, but we need to rename all these files. There is a total of 32 files we need to rename.
Google Groups can be created by anyone with a Gmail account. Google Groups come in a variety of formats. Groups can be a web forum, a “question and answer” forum, an email list or a collaborative inbox. In this lesson, we’ll create a web forum. In a web forum, people can communicate online on a variety of topics. This is usually done by one or more moderators keeping track of the conversations.
To create a Google Group, head on over to “http://groups.google.com”. Log into your account if you haven’t already done so. The group’s page is very basic with a menu of options on the left and a red “create” button at the top of the page. Click the “Create Group” button to get started.
Creating collections of YouTube videos can become a collaborative process. The collaboration is very useful in many areas, including education. Teachers in a campus within grade levels or within departments can collaborate on curating playlists to be used as part of classroom instruction. Students can collaborate on playlists and create them for research or projects.
We have a playlist page open. This playlist is gathering relevant videos related to Mars exploration. The playlist has to be either open to the public or unlisted. Collaboration on playlists doesn’t work on private playlists. To invite collaborators, we’ll click the “Playlist settings” button.
Playlists are a convenient way to organize our favorite videos from YouTube. We can share these playlists with others. To share a playlist head on over to YouTube and click on your account in the right corner. Click on the “Creator Studio” button.
A Playlist in YouTube is a collection of related videos. Playlists can be used to organize videos into categories. Playlists can also be shared with others. We can create playlists for our videos in the Creator Studio section of the YouTube channel. Click on your account icon in YouTube and click the “Creator Studio” button.
When working on art concepts I often need to present more than one option or I need to try out more than one version of an art concept. Artboards in Illustrator allow us to create more than one design in an illustrator document.
In this example, we have several Artboards for a logo project.
Creating circle text in illustrator can seem difficult at first, but it’s very easy once you understand the process. Let’s begin by drawing out a circle. To make things easy, let’s change the default fill and stroke color.
The default stroke and fill colors are white for the fill and black for the stroke or line color. There is a shortcut to help set these colors to their default. Press the letter D on your keyboard and this will return the colors to their default values.
In Adobe Illustrator we can use text in our drawings. This text can be converted to outlines so we can treat the letters as shapes. When text is converted to shapes, we have access to the borders and fills of the letter shapes. We also have access to the anchor points and curves of the letter.
