We can create a variety of calendars with Google calendars. These calendars can be shared with other individuals or they can be shared with the world through the Internet. Calendars shared with individuals can have permissions granted to them. These permissions include the permission to add or modify events. They can also include the option to share the shared calendar with someone else.
Publicly shared calendars have only one permission. This is the permission to view event details on the calendar. We can provide links to our calendars and share them with the world. We can also embed these calendars in a web page. This makes the calendars easier to browse. Accessing Google Sites takes several clicks using the Google Apps Launcher. Click on the Application launcher, go down and select even more at the bottom of the launcher. This will open a very lengthy page with several other Google applications. In the end it is much easier to go to https://sites.google.com.
Google is transitioning to a very user-friendly version of Google Sites. We will be using the user-friendly version. Click on the New Google Sites link. We won’t be going through all the options available in Google Sites during this lesson. The purpose here is to make our shared calendars public.
A welcome set of slides will display the first time we access the new site. Click on the “Get Started” button if you see this information.
The center of the page informs us to click the “+” to create a new site.
The plus button is located in the lower right corner of the page. Click on this button to begin creating the site.
An information box appears with an option to take a tour of the new site. Go through the tour if you want, I’ll wait right here for you.
Provide a name for the site by clicking on the “Your Page Title” place-holder at the top of the page.
All changes in Google sites are automatically saved. Nothing is viewable by the public until we click the “Publish” button.
There is an embed section in the “Insert” panel on the right side. One of these options includes Google calendars. Click on the calendar option.
A calendars panel will open. Calendars associated with the account appear under the “My Calendars” section.
Shared calendars appear under the other calendars section. We see the “Stone and Pebble…” shared calendar in this section. Click once on this calendar.
Other shared calendars will be listed in the same panel. Select other calendars by clicking on each calendar name.
A count of the calendars selected will be shown at the bottom. Click the Insert button when all the calendars to be included on the site have been selected.
You might not have all the calendars that will be listed on the site at this time but they can be added later using the same process.
The calendars are placed on the page with one calendar per row. We can leave these calendars as they are or we can arrange them.
Click and drag a calendar icon to move it around. A calendar can be moved when it is selected and the mouse arrow changes to opposing arrows.
Blue vertical lines will appear as we drag the calendar. These blue lines are columns we can use to align the calendar in rows or columns. Release the calendar when it is in position.
Repeat the process with other calendars.
Calendars can be resized using the corner and side handles. The handles are represented by blue dots.
Each calendar includes the name of the calendar and the events for today. When a calendar is selected, a menu of options appears above the calendar box. Click on the gear icon to configure settings for the calendar.
We can change the title that is displayed on the page to the public. This does not change the name of the calendar we see internally. We can choose to show the title, date, and navigation buttons for the calendar. These are all currently enabled. The navigation buttons are used to move between days, weeks, or months on the calendar. Days are shown in an agenda format.
We can choose to show the calendar’s time zone and the current calendar selection. Turn on the time zone option by clicking on the “Enable” switch. The agenda view is currently automatically shown to the public. We can change this to another option. Click on the pull-down menu next to the Agenda title.
The other options include week and month. Select the week option.
Click done to save the changes for this calendar. Each calendar needs to be configured separately. Configure the other calendars on the site.
Click on the “Untitled Site” name at the top of the page.
Provide a name for the site. This name is different from the name we placed in the text holder at the top of the page. This name appears in our personal Google Sites page. We can have multiple sites using our Google account.
We can preview the site before publishing by clicking the Preview button. Click the “Preview” button to see the site as it will appear to the public.
To publish the site click the “Publish” button.
A configuration box will open so we can set up the website address. We see “…/view/“ in the configuration box. We need to provide a unique name after “view/“. This name cannot conflict with existing names on the Internet and should not have spaces. The name can have dashes “-“ between words.
The name you choose should look something like this.
A check mark will appear at the end of the website link to let us know the name is not being used by someone else. If the name is in use we will need to change the name. Click the Publish button.
Make sure to leave the option enabled for the site to be searchable on the Internet. Removing the check mark may not hide it for long but it will prevent anyone from easily finding your site through a Google search.
A message will appear informing us that the site has been successfully published.

A site can be unpublished by clicking the triangle next to the Publish button and selecting the “Unpublish” option. The site can be published again with the same link or with a different link.
